Natural Headache Relief - For Quick Assistance

The common, over the counter headache medications are not the saving grace that the advertising media claims. They do not address the causes of headaches. Overuse can lead to rebound headaches which are sometimes worse than the original. The medications we take today can very well bring on the pain tomorrow. There are several methods of natural headache relief that do not involve medication at all. These are all worth a try.

1. An herbal footbath can sooth your body and provide a nice sense of relief. Mix one teaspoon of powder mustard or ginger with very warm water in a plastic basin large enough to fit both feet into. Place your feet into the water and lay a thick towel across the top to hold in the heat. Lean back in a relaxing chair, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Relax for about 15 minutes.

2. Drink natural, organic apple cider vinegar. Drinking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 8-10 ounces of water and a spoon of honey sometimes can cause headaches to go away.

3. Place an ice pack under the back of your neck and a hot water bottle on top of your feet. By cooling the blood flow through your neck while warming your feet can sometimes halt the pain. The theory here is to divert blood flow from your head to your toes.

4. Acupressure promotes healing throughout the body. It stimulates channels of energy known as meridians. Acupressure relies on the fingertips to do the probing and has helped some gain great relief from headaches. Here is a treatment method for headache relief.

a. With one hand, press the shallow indention in the back of the head at the base of the skull.
b. At the same time, with the thumb and forefinger of the other hand, press firmly into the upper hallow of the eye socket, where they straddle the bridge of the nose and meet the 't' of the eyebrow bridge. Press softly at first. Increase pressure and hold for approximately 30-45 seconds.

5. Essential oils such as rosemary, lavender and chamomile may also provide natural headache relief. For nice and quick comfort, rub one drop of oil on the place where it hurts the most. The essence of the herb is very concentrated so this small of an amount should be enough.

6. Use your fingertips to push on the very top of your skull. This technique will help to relieve pressure and pain associated with tension headaches. Press the area for 30 seconds three times in succession while breathing deeply.

7. Hold your thumb and your index finger of your left hand tightly together in salute style and notice the bulge between the bottom of the index finger and thumb. Place pressure with your right thumb right at the bulge and directly across in the palm of the left hand with your right index finger. Hold for about 45 seconds. Switch hands.

8. Some people have felt natural headache relief by wearing a magnet necklace. They can be found at many health food stores.

9. This technique uses your index and ring fingers of both hands. Place your index finger at the bottom of the ear, where the ear and the jaw meet. At the same time place your ring finer on your temple. Use moderate pressure for about 30-45 seconds.

Granted, these self-help tips are not dealing with the causes of headaches and are not meant to be the ultimate solution. But, they may be useful if you are in a situation where you are in a pinch and need quick relief. These methods may are not guarantees, but have helped provide natural headache relief to many people. They are not going to cost a fortune so they very well may be worth a try.
